Childhood is a Strange Country

Current artist-in-resident, Mariana Tres, a multi-disciplinary artist whose work concerns itself with history, fiction and memory presents Childhood is a Strange Country at the Milepost 5 The Lofts, November 5- December 18.
Mariana Tres is a multidisciplinary artist working with photography, video, installation, sculpture and performance. Her work manifests in various formats including the museum display strategies, objects and written fiction. She received her MFA from Portland State University in 2004, was selected for the Oregon Biennial in 2006 and has exhibited widely, recently at PS122 in New York. She teaches at Indiana University Bloomington and is currently Artist-in-Residence at Milepost 5 in Portland.

Parasite (45.52959,-122.579396) is the newest installment in an ongoing inquiry that focuses on object-site relationships.
Josh Smith is a visual artist living and working in Portland, Oregon. Locally, Smith’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, the Pacific NW College of Art’s Manuel Izquierdo Gallery, galleryHomeland and Igloo. His work has been reviewed in the Willamette Week and The Oregonian and online at Ultra and PORT. Currently, Smith is working as a design/builder making custom furniture and is an Artist-in-Residence at the Pacific NW College of Art. He is also one half of the independent curatorial team TILT Export:. His work can be seen online at www.jjfab.com.

The Studios
Our premiere “First Friday” open studios at The Lofts was great. We will open our doors for open studios, art, and live music at Eat. Art. Theater. on the first Friday of every month. December 3rd is the next one. We hope you can join us.

Milepost 5, phase 2, The Studios is finally full of artist! 84 artists of all types moved into 96 studios on October 1. November 1st Friday is the inaugural First Friday Open House. Many of the artists will be exhibiting their work throughout the building. This is the first chance for the public to wander the newly renovated 2nd and 3rd floors (1st floor still under renovation) and meet the new MP5 residents.

Five Alive
In conjunction with Milepost 5 and their First Friday Open Studios, Eat. Art. Theater. presents Five Alive, a monthly live music event every First Friday at 5pm. Friday November 5, local indie rockers Honey Wars and their special guests will be performing a free all ages show in “The Old Chapel” performance space.
