03/02/2013How lucky for me that your production company is performing the very play that I am currently teaching
to my 10th graders. I posted the preview that was in The Oregonian’s A&E section last month on my whiteboard
with the caption, “Is this an opportunity that I see before me?” I gave students the option of either writing the traditional literary analysis
essay this quarter on Macbeth, or attending your performance and writing a review.
I had two students attend the first weekend and they could hardly contain themselves on Monday morning. “It was AMAZING!” one
of the boys exclaimed. The other said something to the effect of, “No, seriously it was pretty bad-ass.” These particular students
are not “A” students nor are they particularly dedicated to the arts. They told me initially they had nothing better to do and didn’t want
to write an essay. They rode MAX, skated the few blocks to your theater and they became totally immersed. Who knew that the Scottish play
and a local company could light a fire in them. They both since then, have been volunteering daily for parts, paraphrasing for students who are lost
and are acing quizzes.
Since that first weekend, I have had over 35 students attend your production and each one has been impressed and excited. They loved
the “creepy” witches, the “real” knives and honestly how beautiful Lady Macbeth is. The boys all had something to say about her. They
were impressed with how perfectly you all recited your lines and one even referred to how your production also omitted the Hecate scene
like the Patrick Stewart version we have been watching in class. When I asked yesterday in class, “Who is going to Macbeth this weekend?”,
a sea of hands were waving. I imagine that out of 70 10th graders, I will have over 60 attend.
So…thank you. Your passion and talent for the arts is making a colossal impact on my students. Keep up the fantastic work and I look forward to
attending the performance next weekend.
Sincerely,
Holly Munly

03/07/2013Hi there, Holly–
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this truly amazing letter! We are overjoyed to hear that members of our young audience are being positively affected by the storytelling happening over here. We had a special ‘student performance’ a couple weeks ago for about 35 high schoolers, complete with a prologue and talk-back (and pizza!), and it was one of the most high-energy, fun
nights this young theatre company has ever experienced. So, thank you for sending your students our way– and for exposing them to arguably the greatest poet of all time. Looking forward to seeing you this weekend! I would love to meet you; I am a teacher as well, and am always looking for other local teachers to notify about Post5′s offerings (shows, events, classes, workshops, etc.).
Hopefully, I will be around the night you’re attending. Thanks, once again, for your inspiring words & for sending a whole new audience our way. See you at the theatre!
