 OPENING THIS MONTH

BHAKTI: Movements of the Heart

Denizen Gallery (The Studios)
Show runs: June 1st – 30th
Gallery hours: Weds-Sat, Noon-6pm, or by appointment

This interactive exhibition features artwork by Kristen Anne Curry, photography by Micah Goldstein, paintings by Geetanjali Joshi, and cartography by Will Elder.  Inspired by a life-changing pilgrimage Curry took to India, and weaving personal revelation into Eastern mysticism and spiritual practice, this exhibition will awaken the senses with a multimedia experience featuring sound, scent, color, poetry, images, and interaction with the artworks.  Gallery opening on June 1st will include music, refreshments, henna, and dance performance.

Weapon World

An Art Exhibit By Ricardo Herrera & Jeremiah Beale
MP53 (The Lofts)
Show runs: June 1st – July 28th
Gallery hours: By appointment (open to public during First Friday)

Ricardo Herrera and Jeremiah Beale’s installation subverts the traditional image of the mounted hunting trophy head with an innovative twist, by creating meticulously-detailed, realistic three-dimensional foam trophy heads of fantasy science fiction creatures.  Their work creates an environment where science, space and chaos exist side-by-side in a world of invention and imagination.

STILL RUNNING

Lumber [LC] Collection

Textile & Video Installation by Travis Beardsley
Gallery 5 (The Studios)
Show runs: May 4th – June 30th
Gallery hours: Weds-Sat, Noon-6pm, or by appointment

Travis Beardsley’s work explores the creation of process-based garments, with a video installation of the process as well as the finished product.  Four performers wearing white cotton, jersey and crochet garments created by Beardsley worked together to push six wooden stumps through a hydraulic wood splitter, pouring a gallon of paint over each log as it was split.  The different colors of paint and the wood debris transform the blank canvas of the white garments to create a visual story of the action taking place. The gallery installation includes the finished garments, the split logs and paint buckets, along with a continual video loop of the performance.

POST5 THEATRE PERFORMANCES

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Open Rehearsal

Friday, June 1st, 6:30-10 p.m.

First Friday guests are invited to join the cast and crew of Post5 Theatre to watch an outdoor rehearsal and talkback in the Milepost 5 courtyard, meet and converse with the artistic director, and get an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Post5 creative process.  After the success of last year’s debut Romeo & Juliet, Post5 are expanding their programming this summer with both A Midsummer Night’s Dream (June 29th – July 20th) and Henry IV Part 1 (August 17th – September 8th). This year they will also premiere the first-ever Portland Outdoor Shakespeare Festival, featuring nine productions by six local classical theatre companies.  Click here to support the festival’s fundraising campaign on IndieGoGo. Milepost 5 is proud to welcome author Marney K. Makridakis on her national book tour celebrating the launch of Creating Time: Using Creativity to Reinvent the Clock and Reclaim Your Life.  She will be reading and signing books at Milepost 5 on Friday, June 8th and leading a workshop based on this book on the following day.  We invite you to join us for an invigorating, inspiring experience to help you use creative tools to live your best life!

Reinventing Time and Balance

One of the most prevalent comments I’ve heard about time is the idea that we need to “balance our time” to live a more “balanced” life. I think the concept of balance is, sadly, often misunderstood. We often feel that if we are focused and disciplined, upbeat and positive, loving and generous, healthy and energetic…then we will be “balanced people.” And if the pie chart of our daily life has just the right ratios of work, life, family, health, spirituality, and service, then our time will be “balanced.”

The problem with striving for balance is that most people’s understanding of this state swerves away from what balance actually is! Balance is not about walking around with a bunch of “positive,” happy qualities; it’s about walking the tightrope between the poles within us and the circumstances outside of us. True balance, ironically, means that we accept the parts of ourselves that can be pretty lopsided. Balance means we can embrace and love the most topsy-turvy parts because they offer gifts for full, authentic living.

Even though we measure time in a linear way, time is and always will be asymmetrical. One moment is not like another, just as each day is different and each tide that rolls in is different from the next. This is why it is impossible to “balance our time” by some objective pie-chart formula in a time management book. Exploring nonlinear, asymmetrical time allows us to move in tandem with an inherently lopsided time and thus regain our relative balance. If we stop constantly measuring ourselves against the standards of linear time, we can accept ourselves more fully. New possibilities emerge as we tango with tenacity and disco with uncertainty.
