Wynde Dyer’s process-based installation, Sorting Things Out, questions the utility—or futility—of pondering the past for answers to present problems and future directions. Working from an art-therapeutic perspective, Dyer will shred 1000’s of her childhood and adolescent photos into tiny 1-inch x 1/8-inch pieces strewn out across the gallery floors. Over the course of the two-month exhibit,
she will sort the shredded pieces by color value and texture gradient, using the pieces to create new works evocative of the repressed memories conjured up during the experience. The time and tedium of this process acts, for Dyer, as a physical embodiment of psychodynamic processes. On Fridays and Saturdays from 12-6 p.m. public is invited to observe the work in progress via surveillance cameras outside the gallery, or to step inside and participate actively.
